Local signed for San Diego Sockers

COAST CITIES — The San Diego Sockers, San Diego’s professional indoor soccer team, announced the signing of five new team members, including one from North County, for the 2009/2010 season.
Nate Hetherington, a San Dieguito High School graduate, along with Paul Wright, Braeden Cloutier, Miguel “Chicky” Luna and Tony Velezquez will be five of the 26 players on the Sockers’ roster for the upcoming season. Wright, Hetherington, and Cloutier previously played for the San Diego Sockers between the 1980s and THE 2001-2002 season.
“As a former player myself, I’m thrilled of the talent we will have once again on the team,” head coach Phil Salvagio said. “We are expected to be quite a force this season, and I have no doubt that we will be a dominating team in the league.”
Players were chosen on the basis of their talent and soccer skills during an open tryout last month. The coaching staff also took into consideration players who had some experience or history with the San Diego Sockers to help in making their decisions.
“I’m ready to work as hard as I can to bring an exciting game back to the fans of San Diego,” Luna said. “The San Diego Sockers name carries a winning tradition and now it is up to the players to keep the tradition alive. I just feel honored to be wearing the Sockers jersey.”
Open tryouts to fill the remaining roster will be held late in September or early in October before the start of the Premier Arena Soccer League’s season, which begins in November. As members of PASL, the San Diego Sockers will host 12 home games at the newly renovated Del Mar Arena.
