Clinic provides toiletries for HIV patients

SAN MARCOS — Beginning with a small donation from a pharmacy earlier this year, North County Health Services, or NCHS, has developed a program that provides toiletries for hundreds of HIV positive clients.
Thanks to a $5,000 donation from Hillcrest Pharmacy, the community case management program at NCHS developed a toiletry closet that provides three personal care items per month for eligible clients at no cost. To be eligible, clients must live in North County, have a financial need and be HIV positive.
Since February, 768 donated personal care items have been distributed. Donations received on a weekly basis has enabled NCHS’ toiletry closet to provide products including shampoo, conditioner, face cleanser and toner, moisturizer, shower gel, lotion, soap, toothpaste, dental floss and cosmetics.
Many of the NCHS community case management clients live at or below federal poverty and struggle financially. Due to the loss of their health, many are not able to work, and live on a fixed income that supports their family. According to one grateful client, his toiletry bag represents $15 that he doesn’t have to spend each month.
