Water Districts teams up for garden-friendly events

ENCINITAS — Olivenhain Municipal Water District and The Home Depot team up to kick off the fall planting season with Garden-Friendly Plant Sale and Fair events on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in October at Home Depot stores in the OMWD service area.Dates and locations include:

— Oct. 12 at 12185 Carmel Mountain Road, San Diego

— Oct. 19, 1001 North El Camino Real, Encinitas

— Oct. 26, 1475 East Valley Parkway, Escondido

Landscape industry experts will offer free advice on water-efficient landscape design and irrigation. In Southern California, fall is the ideal time to plant a variety of vegetation as the warm soil encourages root growth. From November through the spring, plants benefit from free irrigation in the form of rainfall, and there are fewer pests and diseases. When summer finally arrives, a fall-planted plant can be far better equipped to deal with heat and drought than a spring-planted plant, largely due to its well-established root system.

The Home Depot stores will offer give-away items, educational demonstrations, vendor displays and activities for youngsters. Attendees can obtain free advice from landscape designers/architects and master gardeners on how to select water-efficient irrigation supplies and grow water-efficient plants that are successful in San Diego County. The Home Depot nursery consultants will host how-to clinics, and representatives from water agencies will provide customers with information on water conservation programs and free services. Additionally, discounts will be available on more than 20 varieties of select water-efficient plants.

Co-hosted by the San Diego County Water Authority, its member agencies, and The Home Depot, all fairs are open to the public.
