SAN MARCOS — San Marcos residents may have a new grocery store option in their future, as Trader Joe’s announces plans to open a location in the growing North City area.
North City developers announced plans for the new Trader Joe’s on Monday. The neighborhood grocer, known for its unique private-label products and low prices, also confirmed the planned location but said details about an opening date and exact address are still to come.
“I’m happy to confirm that we have plans to open a new Trader Joe’s store in the North City area of San Marcos. We do not yet have a timeline or exact location to share,” said Trader Joe’s spokesperson Nakia Rohdes.
North City is a mixed-use neighborhood developed by Sea Breeze Properties south of state Route 78, north of Barham Drive, and overlapping Twin Oaks Valley Road.
In recent years, it has exploded with new housing — including the 222 North City building completed last year, with 458 units between 12 stories — as well as new restaurants and businesses.
Trader Joe’s is the latest new business planned for the urban downtown area near Cal State San Marcos, along with Haggo’s Organic Taco, Honor Pilates and padel sport center Padel N9NE.
“Every great neighborhood needs a great grocery store, and Trader Joe’s is a natural fit for North City,” said Darren Levitt, Sea Breeze Properties principal. “We’ve been very intentional about creating public spaces that bring together the things that make everyday life better, good food, wellness, art, culture, parks and community.”
Trader Joe’s has over 660 locations throughout the United States, including in nearby Vista, Escondido, Oceanside, and Encinitas, as well as several others throughout San Diego County.
