Tips offered to verify census workers

COAST CITIES — Census reports show that to date, approximately 70 percent of San Diego County residents have responded to the 2010 U.S. Census by mail. Between May and July, approximately 5,000 census field representatives will go door-to-door throughout San Diego County, following up on unanswered Census forms.
Carlsbad Police offers these tips to assure the validity of census bureau field representatives:
— Representatives must present an ID Badge that has only their full name (no photo) and a Department of Commerce watermark, along with an expiration date of July 2010 on the back. They may be carrying a laptop or bag with a Census Bureau logo.
— They will not, under any circumstances, request entry into a residence.
— They should be able to provide residents with supervisor contact information and/or the regional office phone number for verification, if asked.
— They will have a letter from the director of the Census Bureau on U.S. Census Bureau letterhead.
— They will not ask any personal information questions (such as Social Security numbers) other than what is on the official 10-question U.S. Census form.
— Further information on the U.S. Census and its procedures can be found on the official website at www.Census.com or by calling the Census Bureau Field Office in Escondido at (760) 916-9480.
Carlsbad residents should call the police department at (760) 931-2197 if they suspect fraudulent activity.
