CARLSBAD — Three people were shot and injured, by a man who got out of his car and opened fire on them as they were headed out for an evening walk Oct. 10 on the 3400 block of Madison Street.
The shooting is considered to be gang-related, although the victims have no gang-ties, according to Lt. Paul Mendes of the Carlsbad Police Department.
The victims include two males, ages 16 and 26, and an 18-year-old female. Two of the victims were transported to a hospital by air, the other taken by ambulance. None of the injuries are considered life threatening.
“A subject fired off about four-to-six rounds,” said Lt. Matt Magro.
Police said the suspect was seen leaving the area in a blue four-door sedan, possibly a Dodge, heading northbound on Madison Street.
He is described as a Hispanic male between 20 and 30 years old.
Det. Steve Seapker said the victims did not know the suspect.
Sara Wheaton was pushing her two small girls in a jogging stroller past where the shooting occurred the night before, and said that she lives nearby and didn’t hear the gunfire.
She said she has lived near the beach for 10 years and there has never been a problem, and that she enjoys the neighborhood with its houses that are close together that allow for neighbors to regularly communicate.
“We’re the kind of people that like sidewalks,” she said. “But it makes me think twice about jogging the bike path at night.”
