OCEANSIDE — All current and future California Surf Museum members are invited to join in celebrating the museum’s 25th anniversary at its annual Members’ Social from 5 to 8 p.m. Feb. 19 at the California Surf Museum, 312 Pier View Way. Admission is free for members in good standing; nonmembers are all welcome for $10, payable at the door. Admission includes food and drink.
Mix and mingle with fellow CSM members, past and current board members, and CSM advisors. Don’t miss the special exhibit “CSM at Twenty-Five” — a display of memorabilia and history. Look through photo albums of years gone by while getting a last look at the “WOW: Women On Waves” exhibit, which will officially end Feb. 28.
Special highlights for the Silver Anniversary Celebration include The Shirt Off Your Back fundraiser. Check your closet for an old CSM event T-shirt or favorite aloha shirt you are willing to part with. Wear it to the event, and wait for others to bid on your shirt. Before the end of the evening, winning bids will be announced and paid to CSM, and you will give your shirt to the winning bidder. Monies raised from this game will go toward CSM Archives.
Surf Brothers Teriyaki will provide food for the evening and volunteers from Oceanside, Glasstile, will man the bar, serving Kona beer, Barefoot wine, Smart Water and other beverages.
The California Surf Museum had its humble beginnings at George’s Restaurant in Encinitas in 1986. Its first off-site exhibit debuted at Moonlight Plaza. About one year later it moved to a shopping center in Pacific Beach for two years. Its next location was across the street from the Oceanside Pier where CSM landed in the old Pride’s Inn on Pacific Street for six years.
The city of Oceanside began to take notice of the museum’s growing visitor numbers and for nearly 14 years provided a venue in a city-owned building on the corner of Coast Highway and Pier View Way. In 2009, the California Surf Museum moved to its current 5,100-square-foot, newly renovated, city-owned facility location.
