OCEANSIDE — A Glassless Minds Showcase event is set for 7 p.m., April 16 in downtown Oceanside at Sunshine Brooks Theatre, 217 N. Coast Highway. With some music and with the main emphasis on poetry and spoken word, the show is expected to attract major players from Southern California’s poetry slams and clubs.
The production itself is not a “poetry slam,” but rather a “the best of the best” by the locals, especially youth, with artistic aspirations.
Rolland Tizuela of Carlsbad and Logan Betz of Oceanside are the masterminds of this event and also hosts of Glassless Minds, ongoing poetry-oriented open mic nights, which take place on second and fourth Thursday nights at The Twilight Stage, next door to the main theater, 219 N. Coast Highway.
Introduced to North County’s audiences last year, open mic night series was launched by the collaborative team of New Vision Theatre Company and its friends Tizuela and Betz. By their own description, Glassless Minds is a way of self-expression for “various artists, poets, lovers, haters, thinkers, travelers, dreamers, realists and dreamers from the immediate community and the world at large.”
Glassless Minds Showcase is this team’s next step geared toward attracting wider audiences who appreciate poetry and spoken word. Watch the calendar for exact show times, as other literature and publishing related presentations will be taking place that day at Sunshine Brooks Theatre before the main event. Then at 7 p.m.. the main event will commence. Among the noteworthy performers expected to be onstage that night is Joe Limer, a professor at Palomar College, who has inspired many students with his oratory skills.
Admission to Glassless Minds Showcase is on a donation basis at the door. Additional parking can be found at the city structure behind the downtown Civic Center library. Call (760) 529-9140 or visit sunshinebrookstheatre.org for general information. To sign up for the April 16 showcase, potential candidates may submit inquiries to [email protected]. New Vision Theatre Co. operating Sunshine Brooks Theatre and The Twilight Stage is a 501c3 non-profit organization and an official participant of the civic revitalization program from the city of Oceanside.
