Safe driver class being offered to teens

ENCINITAS — A free two-hour driver safety education class, that targets students between the ages of 15 and 20, will be offered from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 8 in the San Dieguito Academy Media Center, 800 Santa Fe Drive.
Reservations are required. To enroll, contact Nancy Perry-Sheridan at [email protected] or call (760) 519-5877. The class will also be held several times throughout the academic school year. The Start Smart class will have officers from the County Sheriff’s department discussing traffic avoidance techniques, collision causing factors, driver/parent responsibilities, state laws and seatbelt use.
The district is planning to require attendance in a Start Smart class in order for students to buy a student parking permit for next year. Students must bring their student identification and a parent/guardian in order to attend the class.
The Start Smart class was offered as a pilot project last year as a response to the numerous teen car crashes and related fatalities in our community. The California Highway Patrol and the County Sheriff’s office have partnered with SDA Parent Foundation, San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth and the SDUHSD to offer classes throughout the year.
