OCEANSIDE — The California Surf Museum Surf Swap Meet brought together more than 30 vendors selling rare surfboards, no longer published surf magazines, and all sorts of surf culture collectables on April 30.
The museum collaborated with the Longboard Collectors Club to bring together vendors who had rare finds such as a 1930s Dale Velzy balsa gun, a Gerry Lopez Pipeline surfboard, and 1980s surfboards shaped by Jim Fuller and Lance Collins. Some of the extremely rare surfboards had an asking price of $25,000.
“I find them, fix them up and sell them,” Jim Fors of San Clemente said. “I call it a hobby. My wife calls it a problem.”
Vendors expressed a love of surfing and an appreciation of surfing history. “I grew up with surfing and have surfed all over the world,” Robert Brunner of Ventura said. “I think it’s important to keep the history of surfing alive.”
