SOLANA BEACH — Each year people and cities around the world honor the planet by turning out their lights for one symbolic hour called “Earth Hour,” sponsored by World Wildlife Fund. This year it will be held from 8 to 9:30 p.m. March 23.Residents can participate in your homes by turning out all lights for the hour, or join a special Community Conversation, “Going Beyond the Hour” with guest speaker Dr. Lynne Talley, Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientist/UCSD Professor, at a special gathering at Fletcher Cove Community Center. There will be an Earth Hour 2013 official video.
Residents are asked to bring flashlights and to dress warmly for optional star-gazing. The event organizers are Solana Beach Clean and Green Committee, co-sponsored by the city of Solana Beach. This event began in Sydney, Australia in 2007 when two million people switched off their lights to support environmentally sustainable action. The hour is now observed by more than 150 countries and territories.
