Police support Special Olympics

CARLSBAD — Special Olympics Southern California is hosting its Tip-A- Cop fundraiser in conjunction with the Carlsbad and Oceanside Police Departments. The fundraiser will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 2 at the Claim Jumper restaurant, 5958 Avenida Encinas. Claim Jumper patrons will enjoy a night of fun as uniformed police officers take their orders and serve their meals. All of the tips the officers receive will be donated to benefit Special Olympics athletes and programs in San Diego County.Tip-A-Cop fundraising events are one of law enforcements favorite ways to raise money for the Special Olympics. The fundraiser is hosted throughout the year with Police Departments and restaurants across the nation. It is also one of the main fundraisers for the Law Enforcement Torch Run, which is one of the largest fundraising arms for the Special Olympics.

“Anyone who has ever seen a Special Olympics track meet has seen the true meaning of competition and sportsmanship. Each one of the Special Olympics athletes is a winner because they compete with their hearts and souls. Just finishing the race is what is important to these special athletes. When the spectators see the excitement and smiles on their faces, they themselves realize they have just experienced something special,” said Sergeant Al Owens, Escondido Police Department. “I have participated in numerous Tip-A-Cop events. Just knowing my little of bit of sweat and effort will help raise funds to keep these events going is why I do it time after time.”
