On June 2, at 4:15 p.m. police were dispatched to the 1700 block of Oceanside Blvd. to investigate the report of an assault and kidnapping. The suspect was identified as the victim’s estranged husband 38-year-old Emilio Piedra. Piedra reportedly assaulted his wife and fled in a vehicle with his 10–month-old son before police arrived.

Piedra, currently on parole, was wearing a GPS tracking device when he fled. Police tracked him to the area of California Street in Vista. Piedra drove away when he saw police, and he collided with two other cars as he crossed Santa Fe Drive from California Street; this was not a vehicle pursuit. Piedra abandoned his son in the car and fled on foot. The child was transported by air ambulance to Scripps Children’s Hospital with moderate injuries.

An 11-year-old child, a passenger in one of the other two vehicles involved in the accident, sustained minor injuries. Both children have been released from the hospital and are recovering at home.
