NTENTION Talk: Give yourself time to grow

Change is a process and it takes time. We can often get ahead of ourselves with expectations of how long things should take. If you’re like me, you want rapid change and momentum. When this doesn’t occur we can feel disappointed and discouraged. Instead of having unrealistic high expectations when it comes to change, what if we slowed down a bit and were realistic with ourselves? What if we took the pressure off and gave ourselves time to grow? To master a skill, practice, mistakes, and support are needed.

“Patience is a virtue,” William Langland said. There’s a reason this well-known expression has lasted throughout history. Patience isn’t easy and is considered something difficult to achieve. Can you honestly say it is easy for you to wait for things to come to fruition without becoming frustrated, angry, or upset? For most of us, waiting is so difficult.

We get an idea and we get excited. Those feel-good emotions are enjoyable and we want more of them so when things take longer than we expect or don’t turn out the way we thought, we get impatient, irritated, or frustrated.

The next time you set a goal for yourself or hope something will happen, remind yourself to slow down and take your time. Not everything has to happen quickly. As I look back on my life I see very good reasons for why things happened when they happened. Trust that there is a right time for things and give yourself the grace to slow down.

Ntention Tips for giving yourself more time:

  1. Be intentional about what you spend your time on.
  2. Be aware of how you spend your time.
  3. Be aware of who you spend your time with.
  4. Ask yourself if you get energy from how you are spending your time.
  5. If you feel depleted or impatient, try something different.
