MiraCosta’s Barragan earns Coach of Year

OCEANSIDE — MiraCosta College announced that Miguel Barragan, first-year head coach of the college’s women’s soccer team, has been named Coach of the Year for the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference, North.Barragan

Barragan took the helm of the women’s team in January 2013, and in his first year the women’s team earned their way into the California Community College state playoffs with an overall record of 13-3-4. MiraCosta College’s women players also received honors this year from the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Sophomore Angelina Hix was named Most Valuable Player, having ended the 2013 season as the number one player in the state of California. Overall this year, Hix has scored 35 goals and had 17 assists. Jasmin Day, Makaela Thompson and Sarah Hinkel also were named to the All-Conference team. Marla Calleja earned an honorable mention.

Barragan, a lifelong soccer fan, began playing the game when he was four years old. As an Oceanside High School student, he captained the 2002 CIF championship team. He later played for Palomar College before moving on to a semipro soccer team while earning a business administration degree from Cal State San Marcos.

In addition to his coaching duties at MiraCosta College, Barragan coaches for the Oceanside Breakers Youth Soccer Club and the Oceanside High School soccer team. His awards include being named Oceanside Breakers Boys Coach of the Year in 2008 and Oceanside Breakers Girl’s Coach of the Year in 2011.

”Tactically, he understand the game as well as anyone,” said Bill Reitman, president of the Oceanside Breakers club. “He understands the skills side. He understands the tactical side. He’s an exceptional coach.”

“We hope he has a long future with us,” said MiraCosta College Athletic Director Pat Conahan. “We’re fortunate to have him join the department and we’re excited to see him continue to build the program here at MiraCosta College.”
