CARLSBAD — A 24-year-old man was sentenced June 12 to prison stemming from a police chase that ended with him being fished out of a Carlsbad lagoon by a police dog.
Al Breon McKiernan was sentenced to seven years and four months in prison in connection with his arrest shortly after 1 a.m. Jan. 25, after he jumped into the Buena Vista Lagoon.
McKiernan was convicted in May of driving under the influence resulting in serious injury, hit and run, evading police, all felonies, as well as a single misdemeanor count of harming a police animal.
At the time of his arrest, police found his brother’s identification in McKiernan’s pocket, which led them to believe his name was Lavar Toosweet McKiernan; however, before his trial, Deputy District Attorney Dan Rodriguez said McKiernan’s actual identity was revealed.
