COAST CITIES — Local middle school students competed in the state math competition Math Counts, held at UC Irvine last month, with several earning top scores.
Brandon Zeng, an eighth-grader from Carmel Valley Middle School, scored in the top two for the Southern California region. Alex Kahng, an eighth-grader from Earl Warren Middle School, scored in the top 12 for the state.
Participants were from the Bishops School, Carmel Valley Middle School, Del Mar Heights Elementary School, Earl Warren Middle School and Meadowbrook Middle School.
The “bee-style” mathematics competition is made up of hundreds of students from regional contests. Questions consist of fun and creative problems answered either written or orally, as well as individual and team components.
“About 150 kids got up early on a Saturday morning to do math problems! We want the students to learn and excel, but we also want to show them that math is fun,” said Cliff Ishii, Math Counts California state coordinator.
