Local Cinco de Mayo celebration draws thousands

OCEANSIDE — For the 20th year, one of Southern California’s biggest family-friendly Cinco de Mayo celebrations drew more than 4,000 to the pier amphitheater May 2.
Live entertainment resonated from the stage all day and ended with featured headliner Ana Barbara.
For the children there were prize wheels. and free food.
Univision KBNT, Telemundo 33, MyTV 13 and Radio Latino 104.5 FM sponsored the annual event.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. The battle exemplifies the power of Mexican solidarity and strong will. Mexican troops banded together and overthrew French forces that greatly out numbered them.
“It’s not really celebrated in Mexico,” Mauricio Gonzalez, promotions director of 104.5 FM Radio Latino, said. “The celebration in the U.S. is much bigger.”
The holiday has strayed away from its original meaning and now Cinco de Mayo is more often thought of as an opportunity to throw a big party, Gonzalez said.
