DEL MAR — About 200 people from throughout the county got cracking to help raise funds to improve the Del Mar Shores property during the fourth annual Lobster Festival July 16.
The event, hosted by the San Diego Coastal Chamber of Commerce, was held on the field of a 5.3-acre site formerly home to Del Mar Shores Elementary School.
The city purchased the property for $8.5 million in May 2008 with a $5 million down payment from Friends of Del Mar Parks.
The remaining balance was paid in September following the sale of a vacant city-owned lot on Balboa Avenue for $4.4 million to Carson Palmer, quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals.
In addition to a lobster or surf and turf dinner featuring corn on the cob and potatoes, the event included wine, a silent auction and music by Cape Horn Express.
All proceeds from the silent auction go to Friends of Del Mar Parks to help pay for plans to improve the park. The San Diego Coastal Chamber receives 100 percent of the ticket sales.
Formerly the Del Mar Regional Chamber of Commerce, the renamed organization serves the Carmel Valley, Del Mar, La Jolla, Rancho Santa Fe, Sorrento Mesa, Sorrento Valley, Torrey Highlands and Torrey Hills business communities.
