CARLSBAD — Life Technologies, headquartered in Carlsbad, recently announced its new manufacturing plant in Singapore.
To date, Life Technologies has 50 manufacturing and distribution sites.
According to company spokespeople, the Singapore plant originally opened in 1997 but was purchased by Life Technologies during the Applied Biosystems acquisition.
And the Singapore locale expansion will in no way affect jobs in the San Diego area or across the nation.
“It (the Singapore plant) has recently been designated as Life Technologies instrument center of excellence,” said Patty Zamora, a company spokeswoman. “Primary activities include the design, development, manufacturing and distribution of next-generation sequencing and molecular diagnostic instruments sold by Life Technologies.”
The Singapore plant has roughly 300 employees and is about 80,000 square feet. Most of the products, she said, are solely manufactured in Singapore.
Zamora pointed out that Singapore was an attractive choice because it has an efficient work force as well as its close proximity to vendors of raw materials.
Overall, Life Technologies has more than 10,000 employees with 1,300 based in San Diego.
It opened its doors in 1987 as Invitrogen. But in 2008, it acquired Applied Biosystems and that’s when it became Life Technologies.
In 2011, Life Technology financials show $3.7 billion earned in revenue.

The company serves more than 160 countries with an array of products which range from scientific instruments to lab applications. Its categories include research sciences, applied sciences and medical sciences. The new Singapore plant will be working toward these endeavors.
“The center is a testament to our long-standing commitment and investment in the scientific research and development taking place in Asia Pacific,” Zamora said.
