Lectures offer a peek inside operas

CARLSBAD — The Carlsbad Cultural Arts Office continues its sponsorship of San Diego Opera’s lecture series, “Opera Previews,” for the ninth consecutive year. Once each month from January through May, “Opera Previews” explore the San Diego Opera’s 2009 Season repertoire in depth.
Musicologist Ron Shaheen’s illuminating talks integrate each production’s cultural setting, plot synopsis, musical attributes and design elements into an unforgettable “preview” glimpse. Opera previews are held Saturdays at 10 a.m. in the Ruby G. Schulman Auditorium at the Carlsbad City Library, 1775 Dove Lane. All programs are free; attendance is limited to 215. To prevent overflow, free admission tickets are distributed beginning at 9:15 a.m. with doors opening at 9:40 a.m.
Bus service from Carlsbad City Library to San Diego Opera performances also resumes with the start of the SDO production season. The “Opera Caravan” is available for all five Sunday matinees and three Wednesday evening programs, by advance reservation. The cost for each “Opera Caravan” is $20, which does not include a ticket to the production. Coaches depart at noon for Sunday performances and at 5 p.m. for Wednesday performances. Reservations for “Opera Caravan” and opera tickets in a range of prices can be obtained by calling San Diego Opera group sales representative Tyler Houston at (619) 232-7636.
