CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy will host its annual Lagoon Day at San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 15 at the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve Nature Center, 2710 Manchester Avenue. This year’s theme is Youth and You in the Lagoon. Students from two area high schools, the Met School and The Grauer School, will showcase the work they’ve done over the past academic year while learning about the lagoon habitat, and their own responsibility as stewards of the environment.
Free parking will be available at MiraCosta College, San Elijo Campus, 3333 Manchester Ave. Shuttle transportation to the Nature Center will be provided throughout the day. Lagoon Day is free to the public. Readers can visit an interactive web map to the Nature Center venue at www.sanelijo.org/naturecenter.htm
Activities will include docent interactions for children and families; story times; face-painting; talks on archaeology, Native American culture, natural history and biological systems; bird watching stations with trained ornithologists offering the use of spotting scopes; demonstrations of habitat monitoring and volunteer restoration activities; and a canine welcome table (dogs, please have your owner on leash.) The Nature Center setting features a half-mile long walking trail along the shore of San Elijo Lagoon.
Food and drink will be offered for sale by popular Cardiff restaurant Bull Taco. Musicians and plein-air artists will set the tone for this day of celebration and learning.
Detailed information including a list of exhibitors and activities can be found at www.sanelijo.org or by contacting Geoffrey Smith, communications director, at (760) 436-3944 or [email protected].
