RANCHO SANTA FE — The Thanksgiving holiday marks the inaugural Family Mile Fun Run held at the Del Mar Racetrack Nov. 27, with a portion of the funds going toward the Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Therapeutic Riding Program.
The Family Mile Fun Run kicks off at 8 a.m. at the Del Mar Racetrack with festivities going until 10 a.m. Following the one-mile run, adoptable pups will hold the “Puppy Races Rescue Run.” Then stay for horse racing with a special 11 a.m. post.
Del Mar jockeys will be running, jogging and walking, too. Participants will receive racetrack admission, a Fun Run T-shirt, and the good feeling of giving back proceeds benefiting the center’s equestrian therapy program for children and adults with special needs.
Race entry for the Family Mile Fun Run is $25 for adult runners (16 and up) and $10 for junior runners (4 to 15), with discounts available for early registration. Children 3 and under are free. Parking is free for all. For more information or to register, visit delmarfunrun.com.
On this special day of giving, there are two additional ways for participants to get involved. Currently, the Family Mile Fun Run is still seeking volunteers to assist with the day’s festivities. All volunteers will receive an event T-shirt and four free passes to attend a summer meet. To get involved, contact HWAC Manager of Volunteer Services Megan McCarty at (858) 756-4117, ext. 305.
Another way to add to the giving spirit of the race is to bring a can or sealed bag of dog or cat food to donate to Helen Woodward Animal Center’s AniMeals Program. The program provides food to the pets of homebound elderly clients. Those who would like to donate a pet food item can drop it off at the Helen Woodward Animal Center booth on the day of the event.
