How safe is your paint?

REGION — Choosing the right paint for your home, office or commercial space is a decision you should make carefully.

Of course you are aware of how important the quality and color are to your project.

Even more important, however, is something you might not be aware of. Some paint companies still make products that are considered toxic.

Luckily for you, Dunn Edwards takes all of this into consideration so you can be confident that you can choose their products as the safest choice for quality and for your health.

Ethylene glycol (EG) is a solvent used in many latex paints, and it is listed as a Toxic Air Contaminant (TAC) and Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP) under state and federal regulations.

A colorless, odorless liquid, EG and its vapors can be toxic to humans. Exposure may cause irritation to skin, eyes, nose, throat and lungs, and allergic reactions are possible.

Overexposure to EG may lead to nausea, vomiting, drowsiness and respiratory impairment. Repeated overexposure can permanently damage the liver and kidneys.

While the harmful effects of EG have been well-known for decades, most paint companies continue to use this harmful substance despite the proven hazard it presents to people
and the environment.

In the early 1980s, Dunn-Edwards® Corporation became one of the first in the paint industry to eliminate the use of EG in water-based paint products, and today remains the only major paint manufacturer with a product line that is completely EG-Free.

Dunn-Edwards voluntarily replaced EG with Propylene Glycol, a safer, more environmentally-friendly ingredient that functions similarly in water-based paints. Propylene Glycol is non-toxic and is on the FDA list of substances generally regarded as safe for use in foods, beverages, medicines, cosmetics, and toiletries.

Studies have shown that paint using Propylene Glycol has the same performance and durability as paint containing EG.

Because Dunn Edwards’ paint is applied to protect and beautify homes, commercial buildings, and public spaces everywhere in the Southwest, the company reaffirms its long-standing commitment to EG-Free water-based paint products that help protect the well-being of its contractors, customers, and the environment.

The company’s philosophy has always been to use the highest quality ingredients to create superior products.

The cost of raw materials is secondary to Dunn-Edwards’ commitment to health and safety.

Look for the EG-Free logo to find Dunn Edwards products that are free of both EG and TAC/HAP. A sales associate will be happy to help you locate these products as well.

The EG-FREE logo on the label assures you that the product contains no Ethylene Glycol (EG), nor any other Toxic Air Contaminant (TAC) or Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP).

Dunn-Edwards has three area locations: Encinitas at 237 N El Camino Real; Del Mar at 2689 Via De La Valle; and Vista at 1970 Hacienda Drive. For more information, visit dunnedwards.com.
