COAST CITIES — Hospice of the North Coast (HNC) seeks women who have a love of singing and compassion for people with life-limiting illnesses to join Threshold Singers of North San Diego County. This local branch is one of more than 100 national Threshold Choirs throughout the U.S.According to Threshold Singers Director Joan Mekler, the time commitment is minimal and the rewards are great. “We rehearse from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month in Carlsbad,” Mekler said. “We sing locally, primarily at patients’ bedsides in groups of three or four, for about 15 to 20 minutes per visit. The soothing tunes sung a cappella and in harmony are intended to bring comfort and peace. The repertoire includes pieces that are familiar to patients, often taking them back to a happy time in their lives, as well as songs written by Threshold Choir members. Sometimes, patients and their families sing along with us, making for a poignant and even joyous occasion as people are poised at the threshold of living and dying.”
The services of the Threshold Choir, as with HNC’s many other patient care and integrative services, are provided at no charge as a gift to patients and the community.
