CARDIFF-BY-THE-SEA — The Friends of the Cardiff-by-the-Sea Library is once again offering scholarships to area students. Unlike some other scholarship programs, the organization does not request a transcript but relies heavily on the essay portion of the application.
College-bound students must also submit two letters of recommendation along with verifying documentation by the May 1 deadline.
Through year-round book sales at the library’s Book Nook, annual book sale events and online auctions, the organization raises funds to support scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors. This year’s efforts were successful enough to provide four $1,000 scholarships to Encinitas students. “Last year we made enough money to offer eight scholarships but we feel good about whatever amount we can give to students,” said Becky Sciglimpaglia, a member of the organization’s board of directors.
The organization was founded in 1984 as a support group for the library with the ultimate goal of building a new, permanent facility. Once that goal was achieved in 2003, with the dedication of the Newcastle Avenue location, the organization focused on raising scholarship funds.
“I like the idea of giving a young student the opportunity to go to college,” Sciglimpaglia said. “A lot of the past recipients keep in touch with us to keep us up to date on how they are doing in their studies,” she said. “We love to get the feedback. It really makes it worthwhile.”
