VISTA — During November, the Gloria McClellan Center will honor its veterans more than ever. While its annual Veterans Day celebration is on the calendar for Nov. 10, the center has added something new this year.
For the entire month, the Gloria McClellan Center’s Out-And-About Transportation Program will be providing veterans living in the city of Vista with free rides.
“We’re just very thankful for our veterans,” said Donna Meester, program manager at the Gloria McClellan Center. “In our senior community, we tend to see more veterans, so it’s important that we honor and recognize them.”
Since Out-And-About is a participatory program, Meester said a simple application needs to be filled out ahead of time.
“There are no qualifications necessary — when you call, just tell them you are a veteran, and you can get a free ride to wherever you need within the city of Vista,” she said.
Before the kickoff to the Veterans Day celebration, residents can stop by the Gloria McClellan Center to view photos or memorabilia displayed by those who served in the military.
“In October, veterans were welcomed to bring a picture of themselves or family members that were in the service,” Meester said. “Also on this board, we place items such as medals and certificates to honor our veterans.”
On the event day, the Music Men will entertain guests starting at 11 a.m.
Recreation Coordinator Cindy Grady said last year the same group performed but they were formerly known as the Barbershop Harmony Society. Grady described the Music Men as barbershop quartet musical stylings.
Meester also wants people to know that there is a special luncheon prepared by their nutritional supervisor, Walter Hartman.
“Walter is a veteran, so this event is near and dear to his heart,” Meester said.
