CARLSBAD — Bedtime stories — a beloved family tradition — have been added to the Dove Library’s roster for a new monthly series that promotes family reading time in Carlsbad.
Parents and children are encouraged to come in pajamas with teddy bears in hand for Family Bedtime Stories, which is held in the Children’s Storywell at the Dove Library, 1775 Dove Lane.
“It has been a long time since I’ve read bedtime stories, but I came prepared with my robe and slippers,” children’s librarian Ally Goodwin said. “I picked out books that focus on a theme — nocturnal animals and troubles getting to sleep.”
The Dove Library introduced the free program in January to a crowd of about 20 listeners, while the second installment in February attracted a smaller crowd. The half-hour event includes stories and songs performed as a group.
“We liked it so much the first time that we decided to come back,” Carlsbad resident Anna Wenzell said. She brought children Jacob, 5, and Jessica, 4, to the Feb. 23 event. “We even brought our animals and came dressed in pajamas this time.”
Family Bedtime Stories is geared toward families with young children. Each event’s songs and books are selected to appeal to a variety of interests, Goodwin said.
“It works out well because if a family has more than one kid, everyone will enjoy bedtime stories,” Goodwin said. “This way they don’t have to try to get to multiple events on our calendar.”
Goodwin noted that while attendance for Family Bedtime Stories has been unpredictable, three librarians are set to rotate each month and the Dove Library hopes to continue hosting the program throughout the year.
“We tried this program when we first moved into this facility and didn’t get the turnout we expected but we’re still hopeful,” Goodwin said. “For me, seeing a kid’s face when they understand what’s going on or what’s funny in the story is worth it.”
The Dove Library was encouraged to revisit Family Bedtime Stories — which is now offered alongside other popular programs like Science Saturdays and various craft events — due to interest from the library community.
“We get a lot of requests from parents who wanted something to do as a family,” Goodwin said. “Hopefully more people will start to join us for this event in the future.”
