Erasing the stigma

CARLSBAD — Monday marked the 15th annual North County candlelight vigil and the 26th annual Worlds AIDS Day. Locally, the Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Carlsbad marked the day with an event based on the theme of “erasing the stigma” for people living with HIV/AIDS.

“This is a time when we come together to unite – fight against this horrible disease,” said the church’s pastor Reverend Madison Shockley.

The church is also hosting the AIDS memorial quilt display. The quilts display panels stitched together of names and images of people that have died from the disease.

According to the Center for Disease Control there are an estimated 35 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide.
