OCEANSIDE — Customized GM and Chevy cars lined San Diego Street for the 16th annual Eastside Community Fall Fair and Car Show on Oct. 3. The fall fair has been held at Joe Balderrama Park for 16 years as a way to bring the community together and let residents know about area resources, Concha Greene, chairperson for Eastside United Community Action, said. The car show was added to the event six years ago and is a popular draw.
“I like to listen to people talk about my truck,” Ralph Myatt of Escondido said. Myatt showed his customized 2004 Dodge diesel truck, that has $12,000 in modifications, including a chrome-plated tailgate and back panel, 10-inch mega stacks to release exhaust, and two sets of train horns.
“They’re really loud,” Myatt said, when he described the train horns. The truck also boasts engine modifications including an air juicer that allows it to reach speeds of 130 miles per hour.
“Some of these cars are way above average,” Tony Pacheco, a car show judge and members of Duke’s Car Club of San Diego, said.
Judges scored cars on a list of custom features including chrome, hydraulic suspension and paint. “As a tie-breaker we judge the display around the car,” Pacheco said. Displays can include before and after shots, information about the car and stuffed animals.
Duke’s Car Club of San Diego members have been judging the car show for all six years. “We try to support the event and support the community,” Pacheco said.
Custom bikes are also judged so that youth can participate. “It really boosts their moral,” Pacheco said.
