Earl Warren students get in the spirit

SOLANA BEACH — Earl Warren Middle School celebrated its 20th annual Spirit Day on Oct. 15 with a couple of “hairy” events and an Olympic gold medalist.
Principal Anna Pedroza kicked off the activities by having her haired sprayed blue on one side and gray on the other. Assistant Principal Tom Winters followed through on a promise to shave his head if the students improved the school’s academic performance index test score. Earl Warren alumna Rachel Buehler, who won a gold medal as a member of the 2008 Olympic soccer team, congratulated the students for increasing that score from 903 to 924.
The 617 seventh- and eighth-graders were randomly divided into two teams — blue or gray. Students received a T-shirt to wear as they competed in a variety of games such as blanket volleyball, the kangaroo hop and a water walk. The art classes held a contest to create a T-shirt logo. This year’s winner was seventh-grader Trevor Crowell.
Spirit Day began at Earl Warren and is now held each year at all four middle schools in the San Dieguito Union High School District. Joyce Dalessandro, who was PTA president at the time and now serves as a school board trustee, started the event to promote school spirit and give students an opportunity to meet new classmates.
As the 2008 Spirit Day champions, the gray team earned bragging rights for the rest of the school year.
