ENCINITAS — The second Sunday of every month vendors of vintage clothes, beaded handbags and antique jewelry set up shop outside Ducky Waddle’s Emporium on Coast Highway 101.
The monthly flea market, which has been open since May, adds another dimension to the bookstore that sells hard-to-find art books and the artwork of well-known San Diego County artists including Mary Fleener, Scot Saw and Shepard Fairey.
“I remember the old Leucadia flea market 25 years ago and wanted to do that here,” Jerry Waddle, the storeowner, said. “We’re interested in vendors who have vintage antiques and collectables.”
Once a month there are between eight and 12 vendors in the small parking lot in front of the store. In addition to vintage goods and antiques, artwork is also for sale.
The open-air market has already become a favorite stop for flea market shoppers. “I’m glad I stopped,” Robin Isacs of Lake Forest said during the Jan. 9 market. “It’s always worth it.”
Ducky Waddle’s Emporium will also feature outdoor concerts soon, beginning with a performance by Nicey Nice World, an experimental electronic group. “I would describe the store as a center for cultural studies,” Waddle said.
