Democratic Club gathers to honor working people

OCEANSIDE — Over 70 people met up to hear speakers from the Democratic Club of Carlsbad-Oceanside share their views on the state of the local economy and employment at the Honoring Working People Celebration held at the Civic Center Aug. 27.
Speaker Jennifer Conant shared a moving personal account of what it’s like to look for a job as recent college graduate.
There was also a panel discussion on how to organize as democrats for the 2012 election. Emphasis was put on how to register voters and encourage people to vote.
“We’d like to see involvement and engagement of as many people as possible in the (voting) process,” said Patricia McFarlane, chair of the political action committee of the Democratic Club of Carlsbad-Oceanside.
There was also time for questions and a break to socialize, chat one on one with presenters and enjoy snacks.
“The audience was stimulated,” McFarlane said. “People raised questions about elections that are coming up and feelings of disenchantment with current leaders.”
The event did not endorse particular candidates.
“We’re a chartered democratic club that certainly believes in the democratic values of equality, fairness and justice for all,” McFarlane said.
