College to offer biotechnology certificate

SAN MARCOS — This January, Cal State San Marcos Extended Learning will launch its Biotechnology Laboratory Technician Certificate program. Biotechnology is reportedly one of the fastest growing sectors in the U.S. today, and projected to be one of the fastest in years to come. California currently boasts more than 30 percent of the nation’s biotechnology companies, and the San Diego region is the No. 1 biotech cluster in the world, according to a Milken Institute Report.
The first group of 20 students will begin the Biotechnology Laboratory Technician Certificate in January. The program is specifically designed to provide program participants with the skills necessary to secure entry-level positions as biotechnology lab technicians or research assistants. Consisting of five classes, or 16 semester units, the part-time program is tailored to be completed within two semesters of study or approximately eight months.
The Biotechnology Laboratory Technician Certificate courses cover a range of topics deemed crucial in supplying a solid science foundation, supplemented by hands-on training in a laboratory setting. All courses are taught by Cal State San Marcos faculty from the biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and biotechnology departments.
