VISTA — Vistans broke out the lederhosen and dirndl dresses for a night of Bavarian-style dancing and drinking at the Vista Boys & Girls Club Oktoberfest on Oct. 18.
A live German band oompahed as guests danced and enjoyed the feast of sausages, potatoes, sweet cabbage and, naturally, several types of beer. The club’s gym-turned-beer hall was almost unrecognizable. German state flags hung from the wall and blue and white checked tablecloths covered the long tables. The centerpiece decoration was an enormous canvas painted with a rustic Bavarian landscape commissioned specifically for the event.
“I want this to be my gym!” Club Director Matt Koumaris exclaimed.
The event was the brainchild of Club President Paul Eckert, who is of German descent himself.
While Eckert has thrown October events before, this is the first time he has charged admission: $50 a ticket with the proceeds going directly to the club.
“I could have just donated money to the club, but I wanted to get people out here,” Eckert said. “We need people coming here. We need people participating. We need people seeing what we’re doing here and how we’re involved.”
