OCEANSIDE — City Council OK’d a one-year extension to its $20 million a year waste hauling contract with Waste Management on June 30. The one-year contract extension allows the city to finalize ongoing negotiation with Waste Management for a long-term waste hauling contract before its present agreement with Waste Management expires.
Waste Management promises to price its services for Oceanside within the three lowest city rates in the county.
“I’m happy to hear negotiations are proceeding like they are,” Councilwoman Esther Sanchez said. “The contract should be signed, sealed and delivered by September.”
Oceanside is also asking Waste Management to kick back money to the city in recycling revenues and a franchise fee. Wood said he would like to see monies put into an account and used to pay down rates and keep service costs low.
The final contract price, fees the city will get back, and a list of services are still under negotiation.
Oceanside presently benefits from residential large item pickup service. “The city really needs it,” Councilman Jerry Kern said. “It’s a highly transient town.”
The city would like to add single stream recycling that allows residents to put all recyclables in one container.
Specific neighborhood requests, such as shorter dumpsters for senior mobile home parks, will be addressed by the city manager.
A waste hauling agreement is expected to be reached by August and brought to council in September. “I think everyone wants it done and to move forward,” Kern said.
If an amicable agreement is not reached the contract will go out to open bidding.
