VISTA — A hard, chilly wind blew over signs and tossed papers at the United Methodist Church of Vista’s Savor South Melrose event Oct. 11. The first real autumn weather didn’t deter residents from coming out for the festival, which featured a range of fun activities including face painting, a bounce house and a miniature pumpkin and gourd field. Toddlers rummaged through the patch before gawking wide-eyed at the small model train exhibit provided by Ross Robeson of the Antique Gas & Steam Engine museum.
The fall festival was put on not only to entertain local residents but also to introduce them to the church, which has only been at its spacious 490 S. Melrose Drive location for three years after 30 years on Vista Village Drive.
“At this point, we’ve got a lot of new neighborhoods that are growing up around us and we just want to make sure people know where we are,” event planner Peggy Watson said.
Funds raised at the event go toward the church’s missionary work.
“Methodism really is getting out in the community and getting to connect with people and helping the community,” Watson said. “Mission work is what we do. We’re into Vistans ROC … We’re with Operation Hope.”
About 200 people attended the event.
