Chargers sign linebacker

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Chargers have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Kansas City Chiefs inside linebacker Demorrio Williams.The Chiefs released Williams, an eight-year veteran, Tuesday.

Williams played in 12 games for Kansas City in 2011 as a reserve linebacker and special teams contributor.

The 31-year-old Williams started 13 games and made 117 tackles for the Chiefs in 2009, but played behind All-Pro Derrick Johnson the last two seasons.

Williams spent the first four seasons of his career in Atlanta (2004-07) and has started 64 of 125 career games during his career.

Takeo Spikes and Donald Butler started all 16 games for the Chargers last season at inside linebacker and both will return in 2012. Williams and Jonas Mouton, who is coming off an injury that ended his rookie season in training camp, will give the team depth at the position.

Williams is a native of Carthage, Texas. He attended Kilgore Junior College and completed his collegiate career as a first-team All-Big 12 linebacker at the University of Nebraska.
