DEL MAR — As the sun set over the Pacific, local business leaders were in full swing during the third annual lobster festival July 31.The popular fundraiser featured live music, silent and live auctions and a movable feast of lobster and steak.
As with most business-centered organizations, the San Diego Coastal Chamber of Commerce is tasked with representing, promoting and protecting a strong business community.
But, with fundraisers like the lobster festival, this group likes to mix business with pleasure. “This is the most fun event,” said Marie Joyce, field representative for Assemblyman Martin Garrick of the 74th district. “We look forward to it every year.”
As the Cheeky Monkey band played steel drum influenced music, businesspeople from chiropractors to insurance men and women to estheticians mixed and mingled just above Del Mar Shores Park.
The group has recently undergone some changes but continues to strive for excellence in representing local business interests. In 2008 the then Del Mar Regional Chamber of Commerce, one of the leading regional chambers in San Diego County, announced its new name and organizational identity. It became the San Diego Coastal Chamber of Commerce, with the tagline, “Where business meets opportunity.”
“The name San Diego Coastal Chamber of Commerce reflects our commitment to promoting and strengthening businesses in our expanding coastal region,” said Nancy Wasko, president and CEO. “This change reiterates our commitment to addressing the needs of the business community, as well as our own membership constituency,” she said.
In fact, the name change expanded the group’s reach and strengthened its purpose. “It also allows us to bring businesses from surrounding coastal communities together under one umbrella with one purpose,” Wasko said.
