OCEANSIDE — Seven church choirs filled Melba Bishop Recreation Center gymnasium to kick off the annual Samoan Cultural Celebration June 26. The celebration honored Samoan culture and year-round efforts by the Youth Opportunities Network, The Wheel of Golden Spokes and City of Oceanside to provide positive family-oriented activities.
Songs, inspirational words and the traditional blessing opened the celebration that will continue July 1 to July 9. Upcoming events include softball tournaments, basketball clinics, volleyball tournaments, basketball competition, food and music at Melba Bishop Recreation Center and Oceanside High School.
On July 9 a faith-based outreach will begin the final day of celebration followed by awards for sports tournaments winners and high school academic achievement recipients at the pier amphitheater. The day will close with performances of traditional Samoan dance and song.
