Carmel Valley patrol given new bikes

CARMEL VALLEY — Three fully-equipped police bicycles and a carrier were donated by the Del Mar Highlands Town Center to the San Diego Police Officers Association for use by the San Diego Police Department’s Northwestern Division.
“Through its generous support of the San Diego Police Department, the Del Mar Highlands Town Center has demonstrated the value of leveraging corporate resources to enhance the safety and quality of life for community residents and business owners,” said Assistant Chief Boyd Long of the San Diego Police Department.
Until the donation by the Del Mar Highlands Town Center, the San Diego Police Department’s Northwestern Division was the only division within the city without patrol bicycles. The bicycles will be used to more efficiently patrol high-traffic areas throughout the community such as shopping centers, parking lots and special events. The Del Mar Highlands Town Center was pleased to provide bicycles and related equipment to the officers who serve its community, enhancing their ability to serve areas not easily negotiable by police cars.
“Since the late 1980s, the Del Mar Highlands Town Center has played an active role in the Carmel Valley community through its support of local organizations,” said Elizabeth Schreiber, vice president and general manager for Donahue Schriber, owner and operator of the Del Mar Highlands Town Center
The Northwestern Division opened March 10, 2007 and serves the communities of Sorrento Valley, Torrey Preserve, Del Mar Heights, Carmel Valley, North City, Torrey Highlands and Black Mountain Ranch, which covers an area of over 41 square miles and a population of over 58,000. Police Capt. Miguel Rosario and Police Lt. Anastasia Smith oversee a total of 31 officers and six sergeants assigned to the Northwestern Division Patrol. In addition, the division has two detective sergeants, three detectives, one assistant detective and two officers assigned to Juvenile Services.
On hand to receive the equipment were Northwest Division’s Captain Rosario, Lieutenant Smith, Sergeant Rick Piner and Officer Gaylon Sells, as well as San Diego Police Officers Association President Brian Marvel.
“The San Diego Police Officers Association welcomes the opportunity to partner with the Del Mar Highlands Town Center and the San Diego Police Department’s Northwestern Division,” Marvel said. “Bicycles serve as a true resource-multiplier by allowing officers to patrol and respond to calls for service in areas not readily accessible to other police vehicles.”
