Body of man found floating near Buena Vista Lagoon

CARLSBAD — Police are investigating the death of a man whose body was discovered on Saturday near Buena Vista Lagoon.

Dawn Casillas said she was walking around the lagoon at around 6 a.m. on March 27, performing her regular morning cleanup at St. Malo Beach, when she saw the body of a man floating face down near the mouth of the lagoon in a small overflow pond created by excessive rainfall.

Casillas said the deceased male was wearing pants, shoes, and a watch, but his pants were only being held in place by his shoes.

Casillas, who was with a friend at the time, called the police, who responded to the scene. The witness said she did not see any signs of decomposition, surmising the man had only been in the water for a short time.

Casillas said he was a White male, in his 50s, with gray hair and a bigger build, but it was difficult to tell how much the body may have swelled due to the water.

Once Carlsbad police responded and secured the scene, the case was transferred to the Oceanside Police Department, which is investigating the death.

The man’s identity is still unknown and there are no records with the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.
