Association gives thanks to members at meeting

RANCHO SANTA FE — The Association held its annual meeting at the Garden Club on May 14. A quorum of voting members was present to hear outgoing President Lois Jones’ State of the Association Address.
During the address, Jones quoted Association Manager Pete Smith, who said, “It was a year of surprises.” Surprises included the Association suddenly having to find a home for the Patrol Office and the twists and turns in the sale of the Dacus property.
“The proposed project is still in the early stages,” Jones said of the Patrol Office, which is temporarily housed on the Dacus property during the construction of the new school. Jones thanked those who are helping to find a permanent home for the patrol, and offered special thanks to The Inn.
Jones identified several challenges she met during her year as president, including the failed attempt at incorporation. “The bylaws were amended to ensure that all members have a say in the future whether we incorporate or not,” she said. The Lilian Project, a multi-use complex proposed for the center of the village, received preliminary approval, but must be resubmitted to the Association board should the county approves it. “It (the Lilian Project) will have a significant impact on the village,” Jones said. “I urge everyone to stay on top of it.”
Jones said that the Association currently holds approximately $6 million in reserves and is fully funded. “We have not lost any principle or interest during the economic down turn.” She also reminded those attending that there had been a paydown of $800,000 toward the Osuna property. “We hope to pay off the loan within two years,” she said.
For the first time, Star Awards were presented to individuals who give freely of their time and whose efforts often go unnoticed. Jones gave the award to Bill Schlosser, Hal Sexton and the Rancho Santa Fe Association Landscaping Crew.
The 2009 Community Service Award was presented to The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. Managing Director Kerman Beriker and Steve Royce accepted. “This award is wonderful,” said Royce, whose family has owned the Inn for three generations.
The annual Lily Awards, given to honor homes with outstanding architecture and landscape, were presented to Mr. and Mrs. Scripps and to Drs. Edward and Ruth Evans.
Diane Larson was also honored as an outgoing Art Juror. She has been an art juror for five years and has reviewed more than 2,000 projects.
Candidates running for board of directors were also given the opportunity to present a three-minute campaign statement. Steve Shillington, Jack Queen, Susan Marr and Dick Doughty said why they were running for board of directors and voiced their concerns.
Jones was also honored for the service she provided during the past year. “Lois is extremely dedicated,” Association Vice President Tim Sullivan said. “She holds productive meetings. She’s been a great team player and supports the staff.” Jones, in turn, thanked outgoing board Director Steve Shillington for his term in office. “Steve keeps all of our feet on the ground,” she said.
