CARLSBAD — Carlsbad’s widely successful ArtSplash returned for its seventh year Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. People from all around the area stopped by the community event to check out art, participate in hands-on exhibits and sample tasty food.
There was art in every direction for event visitors to enjoy. Featured artists had sculptures, paintings and jewelry on display in booths alongside elaborate chalk drawings on the street. Sand sculpting and “dirty car art” were also part of the art exhibit.
“I really like all the pastels, it is more art than crafty,” said Lauree Millette of San Marcos, whose son was volunteering at ArtSplash.
A variety of hands-on activities were provided for children to choose from at the event. Sponsored booths were set up to make everything from painted cars to silly newspaper hats. Clowns made balloon animals, while artists invited children to try out their hands at sand sculpting and chiseling.
Performance art groups were also on hand to wow the crowd. The drumming group Crew impressed the audience by banging on trash cans while jumping on trampolines. The Fern Street Circus performed to the delight of everyone, performing acrobatic stunts in silly costumes.
“I love it! I came back a second day to take pictures,” said Carlsbad local Linda Comstock. “It’s a great event.”
Food vendors were on site serving everything from funnel cake to hot dogs, burgers to crepes. Italian ices and smoothies were served to those looking to cool down after walking around in the midday sun. Local restaurants came out to serve their specialties to the crowd as part of the “Taste of ArtSplash” event on Saturday.
The highly anticipated event not only brings together the community to enjoy local art, but it also donates money to North County schools. They have contributed more than $9,000 to date and proceeds from Saturday’s “Taste of ArtSplash” will also be donated the schools.
