CARLSBAD — Two proclamations recognizing alternative transportation for Rideshare Week and Walk and Bike to School Day were given to the city of Carlsbad Transportation Department at the Sept. 27 City Council meeting.
Bryan Jones, deputy director for the Transportation Department at the city of Carlsbad, was there to accept them.
Mayor Matt Hall presented the Rideshare Week Proclamation. The weeklong event gives alternatives other than driving during the peak hours of traffic.
Hall said the week is meant to promote carpooling, vanpooling, public transit, telecommuting, and walking and biking to work.
SANDAG, the Rideshare Week sponsor, is holding the event from Oct. 3 to Oct. 7.
“SANDAG and the city of Carlsbad are committed to increasing awareness of transportation choices for the regions, commuters, and employers,” Hall said.
Mayor Pro Tem Ann Kulchin was on hand for the Walk and Bike to School Day Proclamation. Kulchin pointed out that the day will help reduce traffic congestion around school zones, improve the environment, and promote physical activity.
“Walking and bicycling to school offers an opportunity to build activity into a daily routine and commute behaviors,” she said.
The day encourages students, parents, and staff to take part in it. Jones said that his department is working closely with SANDAG and the Carlsbad Police Department to improve the safety around schools.
“The fewer cars we have around schools the safer it is for kids to walk and bike to school — we would like everybody to try it to reduce congestion,” he said.
