CARLSBAD — It’s the season when bats finally get the attention they deserve. While some prefer the kind that turn into vampires for Halloween, the real ones are busy eating up to 600 insects an hour including mosquitos, and cross-pollinating crops.Learn more about our winged friends at “Bat Chats” returning from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Agua Hedionda Lagoon Foundation Discovery Center, 1580 Cannon Road. Sign up now for the second annual Kayak Regatta Oct. 20. Participants may come to the Discovery Center and sign up in person or register online at m.active.com/outdoors/carlsbad-ca/2nd-annual-kayak-sup-regattapoker-run-and-sup-race-2012.

The cost is $35 for the Poker Run and $35 for the stand-up paddleboard race, or $55 for the combo run and race. All entries include lunch; costume contest and music. Bring in a gently worn T-shirt with any university/college logo and receive $5 off your registration. We are collecting shirts or sweatshirts for the middle schools in Carlsbad for their “University Tuesday.”

Along with the bats, a lecture by a local Carlsbad Associate Certified Entomologist on “Spiders and other Creepy Things, will entertain at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25.

wants to remind friends that the Discovery Center will be closed during the week through Jan. 31, except for school field trips and by appointment.

They are looking for donations to help meet a goal to raise $50,000 to reopen with a bigger, better center, a fresh program of events and the DC Kids Club.
