League of Women Voters’ stance on Special Election

In the past two weeks, a number of voters have called the North Coast League of Women Voters to ask for information on the May 19 Special Election and to request the League’s recommendations on the ballot measures. Unfortunately, our state’s financial health continues to worsen, and there are few credible short or long term budget solutions being proposed. It is the League’s view that reductions in spending are necessary, but that cobbling together fund shifts and relying on hoped-for future lottery income are irresponsible tactics. Accordingly, the League is urging a no vote on Propositions 1A, 1C, 1D, and 1E and has no recommendation on 1B or 1F. Voters who wish to read more on the League’s recommendations may access our website at lwvc.org (Action Guide for May 19, 2009). The League’s voter service Web site smartvoter.org has nonpartisan information on each ballot measure and is being regularly updated with links to opinion pieces. Please inform yourselves and vote May 19.
