Mocktails can make holidays safer and still tasty

VISTA — The North Coastal Prevention Coalition’s (NCPC) Holly JollyMocktails hope to inspire sober, festive cheer at North County

eateries from Dec. 1 through New Year’s

The holiday campaign once again partners with North County restaurants to

support responsible choices, and to help prevent underage drinking and

over-service of alcohol. Last year’s participating restaurants received

kudos for partnering in the fight to help stop DUI arrests and deaths. Holly Jolly Mocktail participating restaurants require Training for Intervention Procedures, or TIPS, for responsible alcohol service.

Some North County eateries to offer Mocktails include:

— Casa De Bandini, Carlsbad offers a Holiday Peppermint Patty

— The Pony Room in Rancho Valencia serves a Winter Warmer

— Searsucker, Del Mar pours a Spiced Cherry Apple Cider

“Needless tragedies strike far too many families at this time of year due

to DUI arrests and roadway collisions,” said Aaron Byzak, president of

NCPC. “Holly Jolly Mocktails allow everyone to share in the spirit of the

season while staying safe on the roads.”

Statistics show the holidays are a time when drunk driving

crashes peak nationwide. In 2012 in San Diego, according to the California

Highway Patrol:

— Christmas: 28 Suspected Drunk Drivers Arrested;

— New Year’s Eve: 58 Suspected Drunk Drivers Arrested; 5 Vehicle Occupants Killed

A recent San Diego County DUI program survey found nearly 50 percent of

offenders reportedly had their last drinks at bars, clubs or restaurants

prior to arrest.

The North Coastal Prevention Coalition works to reduce the harm of alcohol,

tobacco, marijuana and other drugs in the cities of Carlsbad, Oceanside

and Vista through community action, education, support and collaboration.
