COAST CITIES — Learning new languages and exploring other countries and cultures can be done for free with a San Diego County Library (SDCL) card. SDCL recently added Mango Languages learning software to its list of databases, providing cardholders with the opportunity to learn 61 different languages, all available 24/7 at sdcl.org/mango.North Coastal branches of the SDCL include:

“Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn once wrote, ‘Own only what you can carry with you; know language, know countries, know people. Let your memory be your travel bag.’” said Library Director José Aponte. “SDCL is giving the community of San Diego County the tools they need to explore new worlds, whether that’s by learning a new language or by visiting a different country in person or through a good book.”
Mango is an online language-learning system that can help users learn languages like Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, and more. The program also allows library cardholders to learn English as a second language for more than 16 different popular languages. Using their SDCL card number, cardholders can log onto the Web site and begin learning right away. Mango Languages uses propriety methodology, engaging interface, and easy intuitive interactive tools to teach users a foreign language. The program is self-paced, allowing patrons to build fluency at the rate that proves best for them. Mango also teaches insight into the culture, to help users fully understand the language and its context.
