In-N-Out stakes out Encinitas location

ENCINITAS — If you live in Encinitas and you’re tired of driving to the Carlsbad In-N-Out Burger, relief may be in sight. It appears likely In-N-Out is headed to Encinitas. The popular chain is looking to open at 130 Calle Magdalena, the spot where Del Taco is currently located.

On March 21, there will be a public hearing at City Hall to consider a major-use permit and a coastal development permit for the Encinitas In-N-Out.

The notice states that Del Taco would be demolished and construction would begin on a 3,700-square-foot In-N-Out with a drive-through, a set up similar to other locations, according to Carl Van Fleet, the vice president of planning and development for the hamburger chain.

Van Fleet couldn’t say when construction would start or when the location would open.

“This project is in the very early stages and it’s way too soon to speculate as to a timeline or possible opening dates,” Van Fleet said.

The legal notice also notes the project would involve “parking lot upgrades” at nearby Oggi’s Pizza and Valero Gas Station.

The city’s planning commission could not be reached by press time for the nature of the upgrades.

Van Fleet noted In-N-Out has been considering Encinitas for quite some time.

“We certainly hope to be in Encinitas in (the) not-too-distant future,” Van Fleet said. “It is a vibrant community and an area that we’ve had our eye on for many years.”

The city better consider how bad traffic will be..cause its already a nightmare on Enci Blvd between the 101 and Balour.

    • I have yet to hear the city worry about too much traffic or parking congestion. However, I’m very happy with traffic calming measures they do take. Replacing Del Taco with In and Out Burgers probably won’t intensify that area’s use much. Just about every main road in town gets hours of heavy traffic though. Still beats walking when you have a great distance to go.
